Dr. McMillan C. Durugbo Publishes Study on Organisational Ambidexterity and Innovation

Abu Dhabi School of Management (ADSM) is proud to announce the publication of a significant article authored by Dr. McMillan C. Durugbo, Associate Professor in Quality and Business Excellence, in the prestigious Management Review Quarterly by Springer.

Titled “Organisational ambidexterity and innovation: a systematic review and unified model of ‘CODEC’ management priorities”, the study offers a comprehensive review of the current literature on organisational ambidexterity and its critical role in driving innovation.

Organisational ambidexterity refers to an organisation’s ability to manage two distinct actions simultaneously, such as pursuing both radical and incremental innovations. Dr. Durugbo’s research systematically reviewed 460 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2005 and 2024, uncovering trends, themes, and topics that shape this field.

The article introduces an integrated ‘CODEC’ model, identifying five key priorities:

  • Cultivating ‘awareness-oriented cultures’
  • Orchestrating ‘knowledge-competitive capabilities’
  • Delivering ‘product-market performance’
  • Ensuring ‘contingency-based governance’
  • Creating ‘entrepreneurial-oriented networks’

These priorities provide actionable insights for organisations striving to achieve a balance between exploration and exploitation, fostering both stability and innovation. The study also highlights methodological, theoretical, and conceptual areas for future research, offering a valuable resource for academics and practitioners alike.
