The Master of Science in Quality and Business Excellence (MSQBE) provides skills necessary for today’s dynamic business environment. The MSQBE program provides students with in-depth understanding of international quality frameworks, issues in business excellence, the various quality award frameworks, and their practical applications in the workplace. Graduates will be able to implement practical approaches and techniques of quality and business excellence to address market needs in Abu Dhabi, The United Arab Emirates and abroad.
This program supports the pillars of the Abu Dhabi 2030 Vision, especially those directed at the promotion of a large empowered private sector, and a sustainable knowledge-based economy. The degree provides the underpinning knowledge to students wishing to follow a career in the fields of quality and business excellence.
This course provides an opportunity for students to establish or advance their understanding of research through critical exploration of research language, ethics, and approaches. The course will prepare students for research thesis I & II that they will undertake later in the program. The course introduces the language of research, ethical principles and challenges, and the elements of the research process within quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches. Participants will use these theoretical underpinnings to begin to critically review the literature relevant to their field or interests and determine how research findings are useful in informing their understanding of their environment (work, social, local, global).
In recent years “quality” and “quality management systems” have been leading buzzwords in the business world. Management systems define quality levels in the manufacturing of goods and production of services. However, there is seldom comment on the commercial viability of the output itself. This course develops student understanding of the management principles, disciplines and techniques involved in quality management systems within, and their impact external to an organization. The environmental relationships between the various elements in an organization must also be clearly understood to allow managers to appropriately assess the impacts of any change, on operations and/or business strategy. The course aims to enhance student awareness of management systems, approaches, and applications in today’s business landscape, whilst also providing an appreciation of the decision making in organizational risk management.
Understanding processes so that they can be improved by means of a systematic approach requires the knowledge of a range of tools or techniques for quality improvement. This course provides students with a critical understanding of a variety of these tools and techniques of quality, encouraging and allowing an exploration of the applicability and effectiveness of different quality tools and techniques within the design, manufacture and use of products and services. The course enables an exploration of the applicability and effectiveness of different quality tools and techniques for all organizational types in a variety of circumstances. The course draws on examples from current research to establish ‘cutting edge’ quality performance techniques.
Managing operations and supply chain is vital to every type of organization, for it is only through effective and efficient utilization of resources that an organization can be successful in the long term. In today’s fast-paced business world, supply chain and operation managers must appreciate the integration of operations and supply chain on the organization, employees, and customers. Priority focus areas include the linkages between supply chain processes and operations design, business strategy, and globalization. This course aims to develop a critical understanding of operations management and supply chain strategy in organizational performance and competitiveness. It will build knowledge of operations and supply chain management principles and concepts and critically appraise how they can be applied across different organizational functions.
This course focuses on management challenges associated with achieving or working towards total quality management (TQM) and Business Excellence. The business world increasingly recognizes that overall quality and organizational excellence require a combination of internal and external enablers – which emphasizes methodological approaches of TQM and business excellence in manufacturing or service organization. Students will be introduced to the main principles of quality and business excellence for implementing total quality management in national and international contexts and creating sustainable business excellence.
This course provides students with a holistic view and understanding of how different types of organizations manage the dynamics of strategy, policy formulation, implementation, and evaluation for responding changes in both internal and external environmental leading to sustainable competitive advantage. The course considers the strategic choice options for managers, concepts of organizational complexity and rapidly evolving technologies within the lens of organizational dynamics. Critical thinkers do not passively accept what they read; rather, they reflect to derive new alternatives. This course supports students in applying concepts and methods to make valuable contributions at work and influence those around them. Strategic analysis requires students to look at the company as a whole rather than in terms of its isolated functions and its place in the wider context of industry and environment rather than as an isolated entity.
This course is intended for Master level students to create an Individual Consultancy Thesis Proposal (Thesis I) within the Master of Science in Quality and Business Excellence program. This course aims to allow students to integrate and apply knowledge from earlier relevant courses in the program to identify and investigate a specific research problem in an organization in an industry or government sector. Students will be guided by the Course Supervisor in completing the requirements for completion of this course, which serves as an entry requirement to the Individual Consultancy Thesis II (Final).
Students will submit a written proposal comprising two chapters, and a conduct a proposal presentation for the Individual Consultancy Thesis I (Proposal) course. The chapters and presentation should include an introduction, problem statement, research questions / hypotheses, expected contribution/s, literature review, and proposed methodology. See P 322 Thesis Policy for the full set of requirements. After examination of the proposal and presentation by the Graduate Thesis Panel, each student will make all necessary revisions before resubmitting the Proposal for final approval and permission to progress to the Thesis II (Final) course.
The purpose of the Individual Consultancy Thesis II (Final) project is to integrate and apply knowledge from earlier relevant courses within the Master of Science in Quality and Business Excellence (QBE) program. The course will enable the student to investigate the specific research problem as presented in the Individual Consultancy Thesis I (Proposal) course (MBA 8918). The research will be undertaken in the context of an organization in an industry or government sector.
Each student is required to conduct in-depth research on an organizational problem identified in the Thesis 1 (Proposal) course. As such, the student will select and utilize an appropriate research approach, which includes data collection, data analysis that draws on relevant research methods and techniques, interpretation of findings, and discussion of proposed contributions from the study. Students will produce a final unique written thesis, and participate in an oral defense of this work. Each student will work with the allocated supervisor, with whom they will interact and discuss the work throughout the process of completing and defending his/her individual thesis.
Maintaining competitive advantage requires more than the strategic insights for the todays managers. They require solid understanding of different organizational performance and quality indicators that drive down the strategy to operational and process levels. This course will train students with skills that are required to deploy and manage organizational strategies and performance for business excellence. Students will learn about common performance management concepts and techniques used by organizations to align with the strategic objectives. Implementation of performance management systems has various advantages that leverage the quality manager’s capabilities. This course supports students in applying concepts and methods to make valuable contributions at work and influence those around them.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Japanese goods were synonymous with cheapness and low quality, but over time their quality initiatives began to be successful, with Japan achieving very high levels of quality in products from the 1970s onward. In recent times, Japan has become world renowned for its incredible record for total quality control, quality improvement process and lean management. Unlike the traditional approach to quality control that is administered by quality inspectors at the end of the production process, the Japanese approach to quality control focuses on building superior quality in the production process through development of team oriented human resource management (HRM) practices.
This course reflects on the influences responsible for the improvement of Japanese Quality practices and approaches from the Second World War to the present time. The course investigates the Toyota Production System as well as the influence of statistical process control and lean management.
Wherever people work together, occasional conflict is inevitable. What sets one organization apart from another is how people respond to conflict when it does arise. The course will introduce students to the latest thinking in the areas of creativity, the creative process, knowledge management practices, and will also reflect on the nature of entrepreneurship for effective decision-making. In a global world, where increasing competition, rapidly evolving technologies and changing outlooks and attitudes transform the way we live work, generating new ideas that fit the changing times, is essential. The course will provide the fundamental knowledge and skills for understanding the nature of conflicts; devising individual and group creative strategies that minimize the destructive consequences of conflict. This course supports students in applying concepts and methods to contribute and resolve internal and external conflicts around them.
Quality management and control are incomplete without transformation and innovation of organizational processes. Whether it is new or old technological processes, the competition around the globe compels entrepreneurs to foster innovation and agility.
